Version Three

Wow, it seems there are a large, and growing, number of unhappy people with the announcement of Movable Type 3.0, and more about it here. I think their new pricing structure seems a little crazy. I could have considered paying maybe $30, with some advance notice. But not the price they want for a basic license. Maybe I’ll start looking for some new weblog software to use on gushue.net soon.

  1. Try Greymatter.

Thinks Hard About URL, But Can’t Quite Recall It

  2. I’ve seen lots of suggestions (because I spent the last few days reading all the reactions to the new licensing):

Drupal Wordpress Textpattern pMachine (Pro) / ExpressionEngine

At this point, I’m thinking of just writing my own… (I have 4 weblogs, 1 author, which puts me one above getting the free-restricted license, and I’m not paying $70/100 for it.)

  3. Try WordPress. I’ve got both MT and WP running (http://www.silverblue.org/mt and http://www.silverblue.org/wp) … the conversion was quick, painless, and it seems to be well supported (and free)

  4. I used WordPress, which is pretty nice. It is open source and well developed.

  5. Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve been reading some of the reactions to MT 3.0 myself, and noted some of the software mentioned. I’m probably going to give WordPress a try on another page for now, to see if I like it or not. It seemed to be the most promising, and it’s free.

I’m also considering continuing work on my own software, bplog. It’s page isn’t working at the moment, but the sidebar news on my page uses it.

  6. The URL for Greymatter is http://noahgrey.com/greysoft if you want it. I use it and quite happily, but it is HTML-driven instead of CSS-driven and it does have a web-only entry interface.

Of course, if you’re looking for something easy it’s perfect. That’s why I use it; I don’t have the time or energy to learn how to deal with SQL databases or (in the case of WordPress) CSS.

I write my entries in Notepad and then post them, and I ran across a mod that sets up a rather nice RDF 1.0 feed, but my Trackback is from a third party source (Haloscan) and I do the topic updating manually.

  7. Catherine, I’m probably just going to start working on my own weblog software again. So, dealing with SQL and CSS isn’t much of a problem for me :) I wasn’t too impressed when I looked at Greymatter (which admittedly, was quite a while ago now). The state of weblog software at the time was probably why I just wrote my own.

I’ll be working on it with a friend (eventually, when we both have spare time at the same time). For starters, we just need to add trackback and better commenting. The templates are already there. A RSS feed would just be another template. Then we need to make it more user-friendly :)
